As I sit here writing this letter, I can't help but feel an overwhelming sense of gratitude and excitement. Today marks my second day at the USUN Headquarters in Manhattan, a significant step forward from my previous three months as a virtual intern. The journey that led me here has been nothing short of transformative.

Throughout my time at Duke, I've been fortunate to gain exposure to diverse regions, from Israel to South America, broadening my perspective on the world. However, my role as a Political Section intern has taken this understanding to a whole new level. Working alongside foreign service officers on missions across the globe has provided me with an unparalleled insight into the lives of peacekeepers in Northern Mozambique and combatants in Iraq. It's a profound experience that has enriched my understanding of the complexities of international relations.

What astonishes me most about this opportunity is the freedom to explore and immerse myself in regions and conflicts I had never known existed. The depth of knowledge and understanding I'm gaining is beyond anything I could have imagined.

Moreover, the access I have to the United Nations headquarters and the exceptional individuals who keep our State Department running is truly awe-inspiring. Recently, my fellow interns and I had the privilege of touring the UN, standing in awe at the Security Council and exploring the conference rooms that will become our second homes in the months ahead. This exposure has been invaluable, giving me a deeper appreciation for the crucial role the UN plays in shaping global policies.

But it's not just about the prestige and the impressive settings. What truly makes this experience rewarding is the genuine connections and insights I've gained from our allies. Sharing meals and engaging in conversations provided by our embassies has allowed me to appreciate the diversity of perspectives and approaches to global challenges.

Coming from a small town in Kentucky, I never imagined I would be part of shaping our country's interests and contributing to UN mandates. It's an experience that continuously fills me with a sense of purpose and fulfillment. Recently, I had the opportunity to participate in a briefing to brainstorm solutions for a US/UN response in the Sahel region. The skills and knowledge I acquired during my time at AGS have been put to the test, and it's incredibly fulfilling to see my contributions making an impact on current national security approaches.

The US Mission to the United Nations has entrusted me with the resources and responsibilities to make tangible changes in the areas I am passionate about. It's a humbling experience, and I feel honored to be part of something larger than myself. This journey is only beginning, and I can't wait to see where it takes me next.

During my first month at the USUN, I have been struck by the enduring nature of key principles in U.S. foreign policy. Dr. Feaver's American Foreign Policy course highlighted the continuity of grand strategy between Presidential administrations, and I have witnessed this firsthand. Attending meetings hosted by Canada, Norway, and Germany, I learned about the UN's commitment to the Women, Peace, and Security agenda, which has remained a central focus since its mandate in 2000.

While the implementation of U.S. resources may vary with different administrations, the core priorities and interests remain constant. It is in the approach to achieving national goals that tangible differences arise. As a colleague wisely put it, no President comes into office with the intention of drastically altering the country's direction.

Throughout my internship, I have been fortunate to experience a sense of respect and regard from the officers at the USUN. Despite being an intern, I am treated with utmost care and entrusted with significant responsibilities. I attribute much of my ability to handle the workload to the excellent training in logical thinking and writing skills provided by the Political Science department at Duke University.

I am also deeply grateful for the commitment to public service that I see in everyone at this office. While we contribute to shaping U.S. goals, we do so without seeking personal recognition. Working alongside individuals who genuinely care about the betterment of our country has been truly enlightening. It has provided me with a profound understanding of dedication to public service and the greater good.

Having spent time in Congress, I have come to appreciate the often unnoticed efforts of those who work tirelessly behind closed doors, ensuring the functioning of our country. They may not receive public recognition, but their service is indispensable, and we owe them our gratitude. It is essential to acknowledge these unsung heroes who make significant contributions to our nation's welfare.

Serving as an intern at the USUN has been an enriching experience, offering a multitude of invaluable perks. On a daily basis, we are privileged to witness high-level Security Council meetings, actively contribute to negotiations, and represent the US delegation in various gatherings. The opportunity to live in the vibrant city of New York is an added bonus.

Undoubtedly, the highlight of it all is the annual July 4th party at the United Nations. This year's celebration was especially significant as it marked the return of in-person gatherings after a long hiatus since 2019. Although George Clooney was not present, the event was still awesome, bringing people from different corners of the world together to celebrate the spirit of this great nation. The interactions with diplomats who have served in diverse places like Nigeria and Pakistan have opened my eyes to invaluable lessons and perspectives.

Working as a civil/foreign service officer demands an unparalleled level of humility, courage, and adaptability. My time at this office has been a revelation, teaching me that true success and fulfillment stem from being receptive to new opportunities and experiences that challenge our preconceived notions. The exposure to every part of the world makes this office distinct from other State Department entities. From West Africa to Ukraine and Eastern Europe, each week brings a fresh focus and a chance to immerse myself in different cultures and histories.

What excites me the most is the prospect of waking up every day with the possibility of learning something entirely new, discovering unique cultures, and delving into histories that were once foreign to me. This internship has fostered a profound appreciation for the interconnectedness of our world and the importance of staying open-minded and curious. It is a privilege to be part of a team that actively engages in global affairs and promotes understanding across borders.

Over the past three weeks, I have immersed myself in crucial meetings and negotiations at the United Nations Council, focusing on the renewal of the Syria cross-border mechanism. Working diligently alongside tireless officers, I committed long hours and efforts to create materials and support consultations that aimed to extend life-saving humanitarian aid into northern Syria for another 12 months under U.N. Security Council Resolution 2585. However, my hopes were shattered when Russia exercised its veto, leading to the expiration of eight years of aid.

As I reflect on these events, I find myself questioning the effectiveness of the United Nations mechanism. Earlier this month, I experienced a non-proliferation-related negotiation that dragged on due to disagreements over previously accepted phrasing. Witnessing years of collective work go to waste because of one country's disregard for vulnerable lives raises significant concerns. The Assad regime's manipulation of aid deliveries for its own gains, while Russia supports it, further deepens my disappointment.

I initially joined this department with an idealistic belief that humanitarian needs would prevail over political interests. While I still take pride in my country's commitment to moral values, I've come to realize that not all nations share this dedication. The notion of "national interests" remains complex and ambiguous, leading to different interpretations and practices among states. As a result, international compromise often proves unsatisfactory, coming at a high cost to the pride and satisfaction of nations involved.

My time at the U.S. Mission has been incredibly valuable, but it has also been emotionally challenging. The frustration I experience is not unique; diplomats face similar challenges daily. Although negotiations don't always yield immediate results, I've learned that diplomacy is a long game, and perseverance can lead to outcomes that are worth the wait.

Recently, amidst the setbacks, a resolution was finally passed to continue cross-border aid deliveries for six months. While it falls short of perfection, its impact on the lives of those in need is immeasurable and serves as a reminder of the significance of our work. We may not always achieve everything we hope for, but every small step forward brings hope and progress.

This internship has enabled me to embark upon a transformative journey, solidifying my desire to pursue a fulfilling career in public service. The past two weeks have been filled with extraordinary experiences, from meeting Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, to facing challenges like getting stuck in a UN elevator with foreign diplomats, and participating in closed discussions between high-ranking ambassadors addressing the geopolitical consequences of war.

Meeting the Royals was an eye-opening experience that showcased the excitement and potential of a career in public service. It allowed me to interact with passionate individuals who are dedicated to making a positive impact on the world. Working at the United Nations has provided me with the opportunity to immerse myself in a multitude of fields I am passionate about. For instance, my involvement in developing plans for the UN Ocean Conference alongside officers from various organizations allowed me to address my concerns regarding climate change and global warming actively.

Though being stuck in a UN elevator was not a new experience, it offered a unique challenge that enabled me to apply my elementary Italian skills in a professional context. Engaging in conversation with diplomatic counterparts during that time exemplified the essence of diplomacy—collaboratively overcoming communication barriers and fostering mutual understanding.

Throughout the past week, I devoted myself to my responsibilities with unwavering dedication, often working overtime. Collaborating with my colleagues to strategize missions and resolutions spanning the globe was truly awe-inspiring. While I cannot divulge specific details, the materials created and conversations that took place have become my proudest achievements to date. Witnessing diplomats unite to bridge divides and make concessions in pursuit of a more compassionate and giving world has left an indelible impression on me.

This internship has undeniably reinforced the belief that diplomacy is both a challenging and worthwhile endeavor. It requires resilience, the ability to persevere through occasional setbacks, and a commitment to the greater good. I am more determined than ever to contribute my skills and passion to meaningful causes, further solidifying my conviction that a career in public service is the path I genuinely intend to pursue.
