The Duke Program in American Grand Strategy hosted Nikki Haley, United States Ambassador to the United Nations and former governor of South Carolina and member of the South Carolina House of Representatives on April 5, 2018 in Page Auditorium.

“Ambassador Haley has a pivotal role in American foreign policy. The United Nations is at the center of many of the most contentious and critical foreign policy challenges the Trump administration must confront, and the ambassador has played one of the leading roles in advancing American interests and forging cooperative relations with like-minded partners in the current environment,” says AGS Director Peter Feaver. “She has also earned a reputation as a forthright and compelling articulator of America’s role.”

Ambassador Haley visited Duke to discuss strategies for confronting today’s global governance challenges. In a conversation moderated by Professor Peter Feaver, Ambassador Haley shared insight from her experience in global governance, hitting on topics ranging from the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, to Russian relations and the Iran nuclear deal.

Do we stay in a deal where Iran has taken our money and has continued to violate UN resolutions? We can be like the Europeans and close our eyes and not look… There’s a sunset clause and were already 3 years into it. Are you okay with that?

This conversation was presented by the Duke Program in American Grand Strategy, and co-sponsored by Duke Political Science and the Sanford School of Public Policy. This event was also named a Terry Sanford Distinguished Lecture, part of the yearlong centennial celebration of the late Terry Sanford, Duke’s president from 1970-1985.
