Professor David Schanzer joined Juliette Kayyem to discuss policy and policing in the U.S.
Juliette Kayyem, former Assistant Secretary of Homeland Security for Intergovernmental Affairs under President Obama, talked to AGS virtually on September 1st, 2020. During her discussion with Professor David Schanzer, she discussed a variety of current issues, including police brutality, ongoing protests, President Trump’s use of military units within the United States, and the rise of white supremacy in the United States. During her comments, she focused on the convergence of these issues in the United States today. She discussed how the President’s use of force in Lafayette Square as well as the deployment of troops to Portland violated the political neutrality of the military. Looking at the rise of white supremacy, she mentioned stochastic terrorism, in which the public often shames an ideology into small, lone-wolf attacks. She argued that the President altered the norms surrounding these ideologies, leading to the normalization and resurgence of white supremacy.
