Arctic Security Conversation

On February 10, join the Program in American Grand Strategy for a lunchtime conversation on Arctic security with Tim Nichols and Charles Q. Brown, Jr. Peter Feaver will moderate.

This event is free and open to the public. Registration is required. Lunch will be available prior to the talk.

Tim Nichols (B.A, UVA; M.A, USF; M.B.A.,NCSU) Tim served as an intelligence officer in the Marine Corps for over 21 years with extensive experience in the special operations, intelligence, and counterterrorism fields. His overseas experience spanned deployments to Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Afghanistan, the Middle East, East Africa, Central America, and the Pacific. He was designated a Regional Affairs Officer for East Africa. While in Iraq, he directed a joint interagency task force attempting to track and target foreign extremists traveling to Iraq for violent activities. Prior to his retirement from the military, Tim taught courses in Leadership, Ethics, and Management at Duke, UNC, and NC State for four years. In addition to his consulting activities, Tim is currently a research fellow and visiting professor of the practice in the School of Public Policy at Duke University. He is the executive director of the Counterterrorism and Public Policy Fellowship Program and the Faculty Representative for the Master of National Security Policy Program. His research interests and teaching responsibilities include policy analysis, intelligence, interagency coordination, national security, homeland security and counterterrorism policy.

General Charles Q. Brown, Jr., Retired served as the 21st Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff—the nation’s highest-ranking military officer and senior military advisor to the President, Secretary of Defense, and National Security Council. He now serves as an Executive-in-Residence at Duke University, jointly appointed in the Sanford School of Public Policy and the Pratt School of Engineering. He retired from the U.S. Air Force after nearly 40 years of service, including as the 22nd Chief of Staff and the first African American to lead a military service. A command pilot with 3,100+ flying hours—primarily in the F-16—he led coalition operations across Asia, Europe, Africa, and the Middle East. He holds a B.S. in civil engineering from Texas Tech University and a master’s in aeronautical science from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. Named one of TIME’s 100 Most Influential People, he enjoys NFL football, exploring good food, and smoking a mean brisket. He holds being a husband, father, son, and brother among his most valued roles.
