AGS event summary by Dora Pekec:

Former Special Representative to Muslim Communities and an expert on countering violent extremism Farah Pandith spoke to the Duke community on September 11, 2019 concerning how the United States ought to approach counterterrorism, and specifically the rise of extremism among Muslim millennials. Her refreshing take on countering extremism from her new book, How We Win: How Cutting-Edge Entrepreneurs, Political Visionaries, Enlightened Business Leaders, and Social Media Mavens Can Defeat the Extremist Threat, explores how an us vs. them mentality which formulates in the United States funnels radicalization. Having visited over 80 countries during her position under the Obama administration, Pandith observed what she has labeled as the “Halalization” of Islam among millennial Muslims around the world. Pandith stressed the power of inclusive language and the significance of soft power initiatives such as CVE programs, on behalf of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and the private sector.
